So here we are! The switch has been thrown, and the site is now officially LIVE!

The mission of this site can be expressed in four words: Explore. Listen. Share. Support.

With Steampunk-Music.com, I wanted to create a single point where you could do all of that within just a few mouse clicks. Find artists by style of music or location. Listen to their work and see them live. Share it with others via the social networks. Support them by purchasing their music.

I don't just encourage people to do this because I myself make steampunk music. I practice it. I'm a fan. I enjoying experiencing the efforts of other artists and supporting their work so they can keep making more of it. Here's just a small part of the collection of steampunk music I've amassed over the past few years. This of course doesn't include any of the digital-only purchases I've made.

I've always had eclectic tastes in music, and the borderless nature of steampunk music inspires me. It's like this blank canvas where anything goes so long as it relates--in some way--to anachronistic ideas. In what other "genre" would you find bands as disparate as Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer, Eli August, Frenchy and the Punk, Victor Sierra, and Steam Powered Giraffe?

Current features

The site's launching with the following set of features.

  • Original Articles:  Artist interviews, articles about the creation of steampunk music, album reviews, concert and convention updates--you name it. Each artist crafts their sound and songs differently, so let's peek behind the curtain and see how they do it.
  • Artist Listings: A comprehensive list of steampunk-inspired or -friendly bands, including albums, links, bio, Twitter feeds, and other information. Expect more to be added to each band's page in the future.
  • Event Calendar: Concerts and convention details, plus the artists involved.
  • Crowdfunding: With crowdfunding becoming so prevalent, I felt it was vital to consolidate all current efforts into a single location. Kickstarter. Indiegogo. PledgeMusic. Many great projects were realized only through the support of the fans. Unwoman's The Fires I Started... album. The Extraordinary Contraptions' latest The Time Traveller's Constant. Frenchy and the Punk's Hey Hey, Cabaret. I could go on, but suffice it to say these crowdfunding movements have become integral components of many a band's success.
  • Music Videos: A quickly growing list of music videos, sorted by release date. There's some really imaginative stuff out there that needs to be seen.

What the Future Holds

Of course this is all Phase I. There's plenty more on the horizon.

  • Music Compilations: The first compilation is already in development. Artist and track listings are not finalized, but keep an eye out for it. The goal is to do themed compilations, instead of broad-spectrum views of the genre.
  • Press Release Section: A feed for fresh artist news. Album releases. New merchandise.
  • Photography: I'd like to add a photography section for each artist, with submissions by fans. Here are some of the pics I've taken over the years. More are available at my official site: http://www.escapetheclouds.com/photo.cfm

    Frenchy and the Punk

    Voltaire

    Hellblinki

There is more on the way, but I don't want to give everything away all at once. Gotta tease it, you know? :)
